One child even started “selling” gold coins to the other kids from his cauldron, which quickly turned into an imaginative play moment.

The kids got to create their own bubbling leprechaun potions, and the excitement around the table was contagious.
What we used
- Small cauldron pots
- Gold glitter
- Green food coloring
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Preschool science droppers
- Dollar Tree science trays
How we set it up
I placed a little gold glitter and a few drops of green food coloring into the bottom of each cauldron. Then I filled the cauldrons halfway with baking soda.
Each child had a small bowl of vinegar and a science dropper.
Their job was to slowly squeeze vinegar into the cauldron to see what would happen.
What happened
The moment the vinegar touched the baking soda, the cauldrons started bubbling with bright green fizz.
The kids were completely mesmerized.
One child whispered, “It’s real leprechaun magic!” while the others leaned closer to watch the potion bubble over the sides of the pot.
Of course, everyone immediately wanted to make another potion.

I encouraged the kids to get creative and design their traps however they wanted.

The night before St. Patrick’s Day, we set the traps on the table and sprinkled a little St. Patrick’s Day confetti around them to make it look like a leprechaun had visited.
Some teachers and parents like to add funny notes like:
“Nice try! Maybe next year!”
“Too slow! Try again next time!”
You can even add tiny leprechaun footprints using green paint or a stamp to make it extra magical.
St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun Scavenger Hunt for Kids
One of the biggest hits in our classroom was a leprechaun scavenger hunt with rhyming clues hidden around the room.
The children followed clues left behind by a mischievous leprechaun and searched different places around the daycare.
Clue locations included

- the kitchen sink
Each clue led them to a small surprise like:

At one stop, the kids discovered Lucky Charms treats. At another, they found coloring sheets and rainbow glitter crayons.
At the final clue, they found certificates celebrating that they almost caught the leprechaun.

We also made a rainbow handprint craft that turned out super cute.
